Theresa McCarty
As a current student in the Master of Arts in Global Risk (online) program at Johns Hopkins SAIS, I have been fortunate to engage in rigorous coursework and practical experiences that have significantly shaped my career trajectory in sustainability consulting and international stakeholder engagement.
I have eight-plus years working in clean energy, decarbonization, and policy analysis, which has given me a solid foundation, but the master’s program took my understanding further. I’ve gained insights into the real-world impact of these fields through the program’s comprehensive approach to risk analysis and international finance.
The interdisciplinary nature of the MA in Global Risk (online) has been instrumental in developing my ability to assess global risks from multiple angles—economic, environmental, and social. I’m able to approach challenges like decarbonization from both technical and strategic perspectives.
My background in energy efficiency and financing mechanisms has also been enriched by the program’s focus on quantitative methods and risk management tools. These tools have empowered me to be more proactive in developing innovative solutions for the global energy transition.
One of the most valuable aspects of the MA in Global Risk (online) has been its emphasis on hands-on experience. Through case studies, group projects, and guidance from industry leaders, I have worked on solving real-world finance and sustainability issues.
For example, my quantitative modeling and research into governmental decarbonization financing and equity-focused energy initiatives align closely with my work at a United Nations subsidiary, where I lead sustainable finance and stakeholder engagement efforts. This direct application of my coursework to my professional responsibilities has reinforced my understanding of how critical effective stakeholder engagement from a risk perspective is for advancing corporate sustainability.
The program’s focus on global risks and international finance has equipped me with the tools and knowledge needed to drive impactful change in corporate sustainability. I know the theory behind global risk and can translate that understanding into actionable strategies for businesses, governments, and communities alike.
As a Johns Hopkins SAIS admissions fellow, I’m available to chat with prospective students about my experience in the program. Set up a time to talk with me.
