Most US-based Johns Hopkins SAIS students can receive some form of federal aid from the United States government. We strongly encourage all US-based applicants to apply for federal financial aid, regardless of what you think you might receive. There is no income cut-off to qualify for federal student aid.

Eligibility

To qualify for federal student aid (loans and work-study funds), you must meet basic eligibility criteria.

The main criteria is that you must be a US citizen or an “eligible noncitizen.” Generally, if you have a green card (in other words, if you are a permanent resident), you will be considered an eligible noncitizen and will be able to receive federal student aid.

Details on which immigration statuses are eligible can be found on the Federal Student Aid website.

You can find the most up-to-date information on eligibility criteria by visiting the Federal Student Aid website of the US Department of Education. The Washington DC Office of Financial Aid can also assist you in determining your eligibility.

To learn more about the types of federal student aid available, including loan options, visit the Johns Hopkins SAIS federal aid page.

How To Apply for Federal Aid

Students who wish to apply for federal aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Federal School Code for Johns Hopkins SAIS is E00474.

View Frequently Asked Questions

Students can seek financial support from a wide range of public and private sources to help pay for some or all of their tuition and fees. This includes national scholarship search sites like Scholarships.com and Fastweb.com, as well as local community organizations and professional associations.

Private banks and companies also offer loans to cover your education costs. Interest rates and loan terms vary greatly. Johns Hopkins University recommends that you exhaust your eligibility for all other types of financial aid before considering private loan programs, as these have poorer interest rates than federal aid and take longer to repay.

Before You Apply for a Private Loan

If you are uncertain about your eligibility for federal loans, please contact the Financial Aid Office prior to initiating a private loan application.

The university does not endorse or recommend any lender, nor does the university have any financial interest in any lending institution. Students and their families have the right to select the educational loan provider of their choice.

For state or private loans, the borrowing limit is the total cost of education for the academic year (as defined by Johns Hopkins University), minus any financial aid.

Know Before You Owe: Comparing Private Loan Programs

You can visit the Johns Hopkins University ElmSelect website to view and compare private education loan programs. ElmSelect provides neutral comparisons of private loan products and lenders as well as links to the lender sites for the application process. Before signing a private loan agreement, be sure to read the Johns Hopkins University Financial Aid Code of Conduct and Policy on Education Loans.

Questions to Ask a Private Lender

  • What is your lowest interest rate and fee combination and how can I get it? Is the rate only for a limited period or is it for the life of the loan?
  • For variable rate loans, is there a limit on how high the variable rate can go? How often is the interest rate adjusted, and how is it determined?
  • What interest rate can I get on a fixed-rate loan?
  • How long will I be repaying the loan? Is there any penalty for paying it off early?
  • When do I have to start making payments? How long can I defer payments while I’m in school? If I go to graduate school and defer payments, how much will I owe when I do start making them?
  • Will I lose my discount for paying on time if I have only one late payment or if I ask for a change in the payment schedule?
  • What proportion of your borrowers get the discounts you offer? Are your discounts guaranteed or are they subject to change later?
  • Would you allow me to defer or reduce my payments temporarily because of economic hardship? Under what circumstances and for how long?

Employer Tuition Reimbursement

Many employers also offer their own tuition assistance, and you may have access to educational benefits or a professional development fund. To explore your options, we encourage you to speak with your employer about using workplace benefits to fund your degree.

Workplace Discounts

Through the Johns Hopkins SAIS partnership with AllCampus, eligible students whose employers are part of the AllCampus Workplace Network receive a 10% tuition discount on their degree program. The AllCampus Partner Network offers exclusive tuition reductions and scholarships to support working professionals.

Our enrollment specialists are here to help you understand if a discount is available. To learn more, email saisonline@jhu.edu or call +1 443-565-4632.

Payment Options

The Office of Student Enrollment and Account Management offers a no-interest payment plan that allows you to divide semester costs across up to five equal monthly payments. Participants pay an enrollment fee of $55 per semester. The plans are flexible and accessible online, allowing participants to adjust as needed throughout the semester. For more information, visit the Payment Plans page.

Special Prospect Populations

Full-time, benefits-eligible faculty, staff, and bargaining unit members pursuing a degree are eligible for tuition assistance. To receive tuition assistance, an employee must submit an application through the EdAssist platform.

Initial applications will be reviewed for policy compliance by the program administrator before forwarding the application to the Benefits Service Center for final Approval. For more information, visit the tuition support for employees page.

Johns Hopkins SAIS institutional scholarships are awarded without regard to citizenship, and many non-US students receive scholarships as part of their admissions offer.

Johns Hopkins SAIS students are often successful at securing external fellowships or grant support toward the cost of attending graduate school. We recommend that you investigate resources available both in the United States for international students as well as funding from your home country.

Private loans are another way non-US students can finance their Johns Hopkins SAIS education. Loans for non-US citizens may require a creditworthy co-signer who is a US citizen or permanent resident.

Some non-US students borrow student loans from their home country, and if those are available in your country, you should investigate those resources as well.

Please visit the Johns Hopkins University ElmSelect website to view and compare private education loan programs.
